It’s not every day you get to bring a world-famous icon’s dream space to life – but when the call came to build the new Malibu Barbie Cafe at Chadstone, we knew it was time to think pink and build bold.
Southern Cross was proud to lead the full interior fitout of this one-of-a-kind, immersive café experience, designed to bring Barbie’s Malibu beachside world to the heart of Melbourne. From concept to completion, every detail was handled with precision, imagination, and a whole lot of pink paint.
Walking into the space is like stepping into a real-life Barbie Dreamhouse. A vibrant colour palette, custom furnishings, surfboards on the ceiling, playful pink signage, and Malibu-inspired touches at every corner, it’s a visual treat that’s equal parts nostalgic and modern.
The dining area is light, open and welcoming, with a mix of natural timber, woven pendant lighting and tropical accents that complement the bold pink walls and branded features. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring in natural light during the day and reflect the candy-coloured glow of neon signage by night. Across from the main dining zone, you’ll find a themed Barbie Shop that’s stocked with merch, roller skates, and miniature dream cars, all displayed against bright feature walls and fun custom joinery.
From the signature yellow booth seating to the fresh flower vases on every table, the iconic “Hi Barbie!” neon sign and wall paneling in pastel candy stripes, no detail was too small. This café isn’t just a place to eat, it’s a full sensory experience designed to delight guests of all ages.
Our team worked to a fast-paced timeline to ensure the project was delivered in time for opening, collaborating with creative partners to keep the vision bold, cohesive, and high impact. We’re thrilled with the result, and judging by the crowd already lining up, so is everyone else.
Barbie may be known for her Dreamhouses, but now she has a new favourite hangout in Chadstone. And Southern Cross built it.
